This means that girls shouldn’t wear shorts or skirts or tops that show their shoulders; no displays of affection in public (even hugging or holding hands can be offensive); no swearing or making rude gestures; and definitely no public intoxication. Some of these offenses can lead to fines or imprisonment!
When I visited during Ramadan, I had to adjust fast—restaurants and cafés were closed until the evening, and it was actually illegal to eat or drink in public during the daytime. You could totally feel the quiet respect for the holiday, but it was also a bit tricky because I’m so used to grabbing a quick bite anytime. While I knew it was part of the cultural norm, it still felt a little strange, almost as if my voice didn’t matter as much without his presence. Despite this, the overall warmth of the people left a positive impression on me, and I appreciated the hospitality they showed us.
